Product Description

From creating professional-quality graphics to editing, manipulating, and printing them, it's all covered in this comprehensive guide to the latest version of GIMP. The book's easy-to-follow approach breaks down complicated processes into series of clear, step-by-step instructions accompanied by loads of helpful illustrations. Almost instantly readers will be able to create everything from high-quality artwork ready for four-color printing to banners and animation ready for distribution on the Web. GIMP, short for GNU Image Manipulation Program, is as powerful as Photoshop yet more extensible through the use of scripts and plug-ins. GIMP is the only professional-quality graphics program for Linux, the powerful Unix-like operating system that just might give Microsoft a run for its money, it has a huge community of fans and developers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Artists and Programmers!, 22 Oct 2003
For those of you who dont know, GIMP is an excellent Open Source, (free of charge) image editor and processing program which truly gives Photoshop a run for its money.

I bought this book on a whim at a book stall in Union Station Toronto while travelling Canada. Being a techie / programmer with no real concept of how to deal with design / art software I found this book ideal in teaching many of the skills seasoned photoshoppers seem to know so well.

At first glance many people may be put off Gimp due to its seemingly quirky interface. Phyllis Davis seems to effortlessly reveal the power of GIMP in an intuitive and easy to grasp way.

The author shows how easy it can be to create stunning images in an easy step by step guide, with plenty of screenshots and illustrations to guide you along the way.

The Gimp (for linux & unix) is a fantastic book to get you started with this wonderful program. Highly reccommended.

NB: Although the title suggests Unix or Linux, GIMP has now been ported to Windows, and Windows operation is virtually identical so if you fancy giving it a go, this is the perfect place to start.
