Product Description
Pracatical proven guidance on how to structure any e-Business web site.

From the Author
What this book covers and what it doesn't
After reading such a negative although somewhat nonspecific review of my book on this site, I felt I should clarify what this book covers and what it intentionally does not address. Hopefully this will then put others in a better position to assess whether this book is for them or not.

This book is not about laying out web pages, or the best fonts to use or even the creativity process that is needed to present concepts and metaphors within a user interface. This part of the design process is often referred to as physical design and this book makes no attempt to cover this area. However, what this book does address is everything that needs to happen before physical design can begin. In other words, how a development team can arrive at a conceptual design that will meet both the needs of the business and the user.

A conceptual design provides the fundamental definition of a system irrespective of how that system is presented within an interface. In website terms it defines the purpose, information architecture and task definitions that the site needs to support, plus how these constructs need to be presented in order for users to easily understand what is going on. Having a structured approach for doing this takes much of the risk away from the design process, as the creative physical design can then be based on fact and informed data, rather than assumptions and guesswork.

In my experience, the most common problems that website teams make is a) to jump straight into physical design without having a clear understanding of how their site supports user goals and tasks and b) to move content onto a site in an unstructured and disorganised fashion, again without much thought to how users will find this information, or how it will be maintained in the future to ensure that the site remains useful and relevant.

Creating a good information design or defining clear task definitions may not be as interesting to some as designing screens, but it is fundamental for designing easy to use websites. Many teams are looking for a structured approach to help them achieve a successful website, this book provides such an approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book but not for everyone., 10 Jun 2001
By mic_ma@hotmail.com (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
The title might be slightly misleading and anyone expecting a How-To book in the traditional sense will be deeply disappointed. It does not reveal any innovative tips, tricks, techniques and gimmicks about new web technologies. However, what this book does -and it does it very well- is to point designers to procedures that help them to find out when and how to implement certain technologies and features into a website. Vanessa focuses on building up modular scaffolds for the management of the website design process. Every aspect of the planning and organization of the design process is described. The end result is a book packed with information about how to create large, scaleable, and userfriendly websites that satisfy both the site-creator's need for ease-of-management as well as the site visitor's desire for ease-of-use.

Web designers with a graphic design background will find the book dull, unimaginative and unnecessarily complicated. No pretty pictures or fancy designs. From a visual viewpoint it does not go beyond complicated flowcharts and lots of texts. For all you graphic designers: This book is not for you.

Webdesigners with a computer science background may be slightly more inclined to like the way Vanessa tackles problems but I suspect that they may dismiss her concepts as 'obvious' or simply out of their range of interest.

But for all you people out there who have got a flair for management, marketing and information architecture, this is exactly the kind of information you are looking for. Look no further! You have found what you have been looking for!

Personally, I am very pleased with the author's work. The depth and sheer amount of information has helped me tremendously in my own research project into userfriendly design.

Many of the publications about website design concentrate on ephemeral web-technologies and their implementation. 'Designing Easy-to-use websites' follows a more lasting path and I wouldn't be surprised if this would become one of the classic texts in web design.

The author of this book has done a fantastic job but it may only be of interest to a small minority of people. Nevertheless, I consider it the best buy I have made in many months!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this book, 12 Feb 2001
I spent some time a few months ago looking for a proper web design reference but had no luck. This new book is a treasure of useful steps and procedures to design a system that's both useable and manageble. One of the first sections covers the problems with some existing approaches and was fascinating and familiar. If you use this book as the basis for a large scale web project, I'd be surprised if the project wasn't a success. You'll also get a crash course in UML - a useful way of describing the structure of a site in nuetral terminology that is unequivocal and can be read by both techies and managers alike. No book is perfect, however and I found some of the web site examples a little dry and didn't really reflect the usefulness of the approaches being described in the book. The section of information modeling and modelling methods was invaluable, but this didn't come through very well in the example of the General Motors site used in the book. I'm sure there are better examples that could've been used. Give your project manager this book and rest easy that the site will come alive in a structured, usable and scalable way.
