Product Description

Product Description
This is the book for scientists and engineers who want to learn C++ for numerical problem-solving. The benefits of object-oriented programming (in terms of efficiency, data abstraction and software component reuse) are stressed throughout in contrast to languages like Fortran.

Highlights of the book include:
  • A comprehensive library of numerical routines illustrating the power of C++. Full listings of the programs are provided on the disk which accompanies the book.
  • Examples of C++ in action, geared to the needs of scientists and engineers
  • Extensive use of icons to highlight key points to remember, pitfalls to avoid and elegant solutions to familiar problems

Scientific programmers wishing to apply the benefits of object-oriented programming to numerical applications will find a rich source of example with which to experiment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uninspiring introduction to C++ numerics, 21 Oct 1999
Another introduction to C++, this time aimed at a scientific audience. If you expect any more than the usual tour of basic classes and syntax then you'll be very disappointed. The style is stiff and the material not even obviously tailored to a scientific audience. The one substantive example, a set of linear algebra classes, is implemented in a rudementary fashion, with no reference to the (much better) freely available BLAS++ or the much richer introductory LA classes developed in [1]. (As a general critisim, the bibleography is poor).

The coverage of templates (given that this is one of the most useful language features for numerical analysis) is inadequate.

Buy Stroustrop [2] for the language and [1] for scientific applications. A much better combination

[1] Barton & Nackman, An introduction to C++ for scientists and engineers [2] Stroustrope, The C++ Programming language

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for FORTRAN programers, 11 April 1997
By A Customer
This text introduces C and C++ to a person experienced in procedural langagues. Do not turn to it if you have never programmed nor if you want to create games or typical business based windows applications. But if you are looking to learn how to use this "new" language for mathematical manipulation of numerical data, this book was made for you. Clear descriptions of syntax and recommendations of stylistic approaches to programming. Thoughtful warnings on dangerous paths that a beginner might stray down. Good reading, it will stay by my side as a guide to good clear style.
