Product Description

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is a powerful tool built into Windows which enables organizations to manage servers and user PCs connected to their networks. WMI brings the power of managing a Windows network to unprecedented levels. For example, through WMI an administrator can easily write a script that will identify what service packs have been installed on all the machines in the network. WMI is extremely complicated, however, and difficult to understand. This book is written to provide a thorough understanding of how WMI works, as well as being a handy reference to how to use WMI to its fullest potential. System administrators will learn to develop scripts through WMI to access and manipulate their network. Developers will learn how they can use and access the WMI through both the COM interface and the .NET framework.

From the Author
Many applications written for Windows currently don’t harness the power of a systems management technology (like WMI); this is what drove us to write this book. We want developers to realize that making an application manageable is a key benefit, especially to system administrators. Once system administrators and IT support departments realize what can be done with WMI, they will start demanding that applications expose WMI management interfaces. Not only will system administrators by happy, but you’ll be able to harvest a wealth of information available from WMI when building your own management applications. The other side of the coin apart from making an application manageable is a ‘management application’. A management application is a program (like an MMC snap-in) or web interface that can interact with the system to gather, inspect and manipulate the systems functionality or configuration. We also want system administrators to realize what they can do in a system equipped with a technology like WMI and how they should go about automating routine tasks. For instance, a system administrator can easily write a script that will identify what Windows service packs have been installed on all the machines in the network.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - well worth the money, 25 April 2003
As was mentioned in a previous review, this book more than adequately makes up for the lack of introductory/beginner material in MSDN. It explains clearly, with good examples, almost everything you'd want to do with WMI. If you want to learn about WMI and use it in your applications, BUY THIS BOOK.

Although the background and general WMI architecture information will be useful to anyone interested in this topic, the coding stuff is going to me more relevant to C/C++ developers. If you're an Administrator looking for info on scripting, I suggest you look at the following excellent VBScript-oriented book instead:

WMI Essentials - Marcin Policht (ISBN: 0672321440)

5.0 out of 5 stars WMI - A Very Clear Account, 31 Dec 2002
This book sets itself the target of explaining the concepts behind WMI and then to show the reader how to develop management applications in C++ and .Net. Not only does it hit the target, but it's a bull's eye !

The style is crisp and clear. The author's not only know their subject, but also convey their enthusiasm for it. I believe this to be an important text on WMI, and I recommend it thoroughly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An invaluable and comprehensive guide, 14 Mar 2003
WMI suffers the fate of many Windows 'supporting' Components and API's of being inaccesible to learners, due to the lack of tutorials and other references published by Uncle Bill.

Don't even try and work with WMI without buying this book. It is both a reference guide and an example laden tutorial - whilst it also goes a long way to explaining why the technology exists and why you should be using it.

Whilst primarily aimed at C++ COM developers, the first 3 or 4 chapters, as well as the "Ten Fast Facts" that conclude every chapter should be read by all members of a design team - again so you can properly evaluate how & why WMI fits in your Windows applications and system or device management tools.

There are also some useful supporting chapters that relate other Windows technology to WMI - in particular a section for System Administrators on using VBScripts to automate Windows Management tasks and perform other activities based on system events
