2.0 out of 5 stars Graphics Programming with Direct3D, 2 April 2003
Direct3D is part of Microsoft's DirectX technology set which is aimed at providing high performance in a device independent fashion. The Direct3D API set, along with the rest of the DirectX family is changing rapidly and the next version is already in beta.
Given that this is a rapidly changing area what does this book offer? In essence it provides a well-written and clear explanation of all of the key concepts associated with real time 3D. If you do not know about frame trees, rendering pipelines, z-buffering, lights, shading, texture mapping, filtering, mip-mapping, etc. then this book gives you the answers. It also discusses the hardware issues, with the Permedia 3D chip as an example. There are also a number of miscellaneous, but related, topics which are also covered such as the DirectX file format, optimising performance, 3D maths and a reference section for Immediate and Retained Mode. That is a lot of material and inevitably something has to give.

That is what is missing for C/C++ programmers--plenty of examples of code exercising the techniques and demonstrating how to use the Direct3D to actually do something. The word programming in the title is clearly misleading since the book places little emphasis on coding and much more on explaining the concepts. For understanding the key concepts and terminology of 3D programming this book is clear and well explained. The reference section does not add value in the sense of having worked examples showing the function in use, but if you like having a paper listing with some associated description then it's there. For those who like to see plenty of examples of worked code this book will be a poor choice.
