5.0 out of 5 stars Great tutorial for learning Java, 20 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This is one of the most comprehensive tutorials that you'll find on Java - almost every possible topic is covered, from AWT, GUI & Swing, to networking, rmi, and corba. That said, I'd advise you to check out Sun's site first.... The tutorial series the book is based on is available there for free, and should give you a good idea of whether or not the book is for you. For some, it will certainly be better than a large download and reading it off the screen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good insight to the rest of the JDK, 30 Aug 2002
By Mr. C. J. Lee "cjlee23" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It is definitely a good companion to the previous Java Tutorial. It is a book for people who want to discover Java beyond the basics. However, I would comment in saying that it doesn't go into as much depth as I would have liked, but it gives you a quick and comprehensive understanding of some important concepts to someone who is already very familiar with the language. Treat the book as a starting point in your road to discovering the rest of the JDK, but it is certainly not a means to an end.

The book doesn't cover the whole of the JDK, but it covers concepts such as Collections, RMI, Networking, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great additional volume to the Java Tutorial, 21 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This volume largely contains topics newer to Java. The topics includes Collection, Internationalization, 2D, JavaBeans, IDL, JDBC, RMI, Security, JNI, Reflection, JARs, Extensions, and Servlets.

This new volume follows the tradition of good writing from the original volume. The book is extremely readable and a great source to learn from. Unlike the first volume, which I recommend only to beginner, even experienced Java developers will find tutorials in this volume that will make it worth the purchase price. It is an excellent book for programmers of all levels of experience.
