Product Description
Real-time embedded systems have rigid requirements and must conform to strict size, cost, weight, power, operation, and response-time specifications. They must be crash-proof and must operate under a wide range of conditions. Add to these requirements the ever-increasing competitive pressures to bring products to market faster and at a lower cost, and it is easy to see why building such systems is difficult. Real-time programmers must write software that meets unforgiving objectives under numerous constraints. Teaching you how is the goal of this book.Real-Time Programming is a comprehensive guide that *Covers 32-bit real-time embedded programming topics, including debugging, timers, interrupts, multitasking, serial I/O, TCP/IP networking, and ROMing an application *Explores implementing new technologies, such as flash storage and Web-enabled applications *Emphasizes a practical, hands-on approach, drawing on code examples from real-world projects constructed during the course of the book *Provides complete coverage of the embedded development cycle, from design through implementation *Lets developers start building real-time embedded systems immediately using commercial, off-the-shelf hardware and software. No matter what hardware and software platforms you will ultimately use, this book lays the groundwork and gets you up-to-speed on the unique requirements of real-time embedded programming. 0201485400B04062001

2.0 out of 5 stars A Manual For The Author's RTOS, 18 Mar 2003
One of the authors of this book works for Pharlap which sells the ETS real-time kernel. Most chapters of the book have a cursory introductory to the chosen topic, followed by a meaty section on how ETS can fulfill your needs.

I would expect a real-time book to spend some time discussing how real-time systems work. A key feature of real-time systems is the scheduling method, and I present a choice quote from the MultiTasking chapter:

"Many RTOSs use round robin scheduling because it's simple and predictable, so we'll describe that algorithm here. For other scheduling algorithms, refer to any good book on operating systems".

I expected this book to be a good book on at least the timing aspects of Operating Systems - an aim which the author obviously didn't have in mind, as he suggests you try a "good" book instead if you want that information.

There are other examples throughout where the author says that such and such is very easy except for this part. And swiftly moves on to the next topic without discussing how to get round the hard part. I don't like the idea of having the obvious pointed out to me, and being left in the dark about the hard parts.

This book is a very helpful instruction manual if you use their ETS kernel. It introduces the topics from the basics and then describes the ETS kernel approach. If they removed the sections on their own RTOS, it would also make a nice introductory pocket book on the field of real-time programming. However if you are looking to understand the details of a real-time programming I would look elsewhere.

To take the aforementioned multi-tasking chapter as an example, if you only need to know that your task will be scheduled then maybe this book is for you. But if you would like to know how your task is rescheduled, and to ensure real-time behaviour I would suggest this is a necessity, then get something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars On-the-shelf book about off-the-shelf computer systems, 10 Jun 2002
This book covers in detail all topics of interest to those programming
embedded systems - interrupt handling, multitasking, serial I/O, to mention
just a few.
Each chapter follows the same explain-then-do pattern. In addition,
they are grouped into several different projects, which develop as more
and more features are added to them (assuming you read the book linearly)
as would happen in the course of application development. This makes it
easy to follow the main thread, even if one often stops to sift through
well-selected C code snippets.
Advanced topics, such as DLLs and exceptions, are also included.
The most remarkable thing is that this book gives a clear understanding
where they are appropriate and how to implement them in your own applications.
Five stars. On-the-shelf book about off-the-shelf computer systems.
