5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first Java book, 19 Dec 2000
By A Customer
It is difficult to advise a book instead of another because something readable for one could be not clear for another. Mostly it depends on one's own previous background. When I started to study Java, my computer background was a sound grasp of Object Oriented Programming (UML) and a bit of structural programming experience. I found this book very clear, constantly referring to OO principles and I think comprehensive of all the Java basis. It does not comprehend (complicate) Applets although I professionally started to program with Web Server technologies (servlets) and I had to shift to more advanced stuff. But I always keep this book at hand as my basic reference. Threads, file streams, URL are well treated. I only miss how Java manages DB connections and enquires but they are probably not a matter of the level targeted by the book. I think I am going to buy the Skansholm's C++ version as well.
