Involving people in creating their own successI wrote this book to help people get started, or restarted in software process improvement efforts. The Capability Maturity Model provides guidelines, but it’s a technical model that doesn’t tell you what happens when you try to bring it to life with real people on real projects. The real experience doesn’t always go as expected. And it’s never right the first time. But it’s like learning the steps of a dance. It takes practice. Sometimes you change the steps to make it look better. You need some choreography so people don’t step on each others’ toes. It’s the same with software engineers and managers who perform the steps of the software process. They need some choreography, and they need encouragement to get out on stage and perform. Don’t expect an overnight success, but involve people in creating their own success.
When I started working on a Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) there was a lot of information, a lot of theory, and it took 2 to 3 y! ears to read it all and act on it. I’ve gathered and consolidated the essentials to make this a valuable resource for SEPGs and for anyone who wants the benefits and insight into how to successfully manage and implement improvements.
The book includes a CD-ROM with sample documents, templates, and presentation materials that have been useful to me in helping my organization understand and implement the key practices of the CMM.
