Amazon.co.uk Review

Real World Bryce 2 became something of a phenomenon among Bryce users. Consequently the follow-up volume, which has been in gestation for over three years, has been eagerly anticipated as Bryce itself moved up through three to version four and changed owners from MetaCreations to Corel. Now the wait is over and thanks to meticulous work by authors Susan A. Kitchens and Victor Gavenda Real World Bryce 4 is bigger and better than ever.

Just short of a 1,000 pages, Real World Bryce 4 is stuffed with intimate details and authoritative advice on the inner workings of Bryce 4 showing power users how to rip off the hood and tweak the engine. Beginners aren't left out either as there's a short chapter offering a gentle introduction to Bryce's tools and techniques. From building 3-D landscapes through to 3-D animation, Real World Bryce 4 covers lighting, Boolean operations, model building, scene building, materials, sky lab, the deep texture editor and rendering. The text is straightforward and informative and illustrated throughout in black and white. There's a 64-page colour section of reference charts and inspirational artwork as well as a CD-ROM with images and sample files to help you work through the chapters along with bonus tips, portfolios and extra goodies such as graduations, materials and pre-set libraries. If Bryce 4 is your god, then Real World Bryce 4 is the 10 commandments. You'll not only live by it but by the end you'll be able to create and animate your own Mount Sinai! --John Cranmer

5.0 out of 5 stars She's done it again :), 17 Nov 2000

(REAL NAME)
Susan Kitchen's Real World Bryce 2 was indispensible: Brycers all over the world referred to it simply as "the book". RWB4 was originally going to be RWB3, but a further upgrade took place on the way. RWB4 has been much delayed, and re-writing was going on as recently as two months before its final publication. It's taken a long time to make it to print, but it's been well worth the wait.

Susan and Victor have written a book that anyone writing a third party software manual should study: it's clear, it's concise (despite its 900+ pages - Bryce is a hefty and versatile piece of software!), it's easy to read.

No "see the manual for further details" here! The authors frequently refer to the manual, but mostly to point out where the manual and the software differ. Here, then, is the real manual for Bryce 4.

Throughout the writing of the book Susan regularly consulted with Brycers, sometimes through Bryce Talk, sometimes through various mailing lists, to talk over various points she covers in the book. She also gave the programmers the third degree!

Until two weeks ago, when RWB4 arrived, RWB2 lived beside my monitor - much of what it says is equally applicable to Bryce 3 and Bryce 4. "I'm using Bryce 4. If that's the case why should I bother with this new book?" Because there's too much that's new for you to ignore this book! It's twice the size of RWB2, the seedy-rom is packed with examples, it covers animation and volume materials, and if you've had half the value of RWB2 that I have, you must be getting pretty sick of the book falling apart!

Forget any other Bryce 4 book: THIS is the book you need!

5.0 out of 5 stars stop reading this and order this book now!, 12 Aug 2001
This is the perfect accompaniment to the software. In fact it should have been the manual. In depth eplanations about every aspect of the program.A perfect reference tombe and an inspiration to the artist block. The text flows and there is not a subject that is not covered flawlessly. I have my fingers crossed that they cover 3DsMax3/4 to the same standard! Should be 6 stars. Buy it!
