3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the uninitiated, 11 Mar 2000

The book as 3 sections

- R/3 Internet preamble - ITS/IAC standard functionality - ITS/IAC development

The first section can be a little turgid in writing style and has a tendancy to focus on obscure areas such as means of managing 'micro payments' and ArchiveLink, an irrelevant (from an Internet prespective) product sold by one of the author's employers. It does however give 150 pages of an Internet overview - but not at a level suitable for beginners.

The middle section goes over ITS architecture and each of the IAC transactions available as standard with R/3 V4.0. The descriptions are useful overviews but would not get you very far into implementation. The final section of the book goes into the ABAP/HTML techniques required to get the ITS working. This is the section that I have used the most but is largely similar in content to the on-line help available with SAP. When getting started with the ITS however the examples - reproduced on paper - are invaluable.

I suspect that this was never intended to be a 'how to' book for beginners. The middle section will be useful for customers/consultants interested in the ITS's capabilities, the final sections will be useful for those trying to get it working. Note however that moderately advanced ABAP and basic HTML are pre-requsities for the final section.

One of the biggest drawbacks is the fact that the book does not touch on mySAP.com or the SAP Business Connector. 2 Topics of equal importance to the ITS. If your only interested in the commercial use of the ITS this book will probably start to 'payback' within a few days.

This book is more theoretical than a pratical book, only IAC componects are disscussed not any other internet technologies. the only samples discussed in this book are those which come as SAMPLES with IACs
