5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible guide to ksh93 and all it's potential, 1 April 1999

I bought this more for the fact that it was a tutorial on ksh93 than the 95/nt s/ware, and I've put it down since. In a word - it's excellent. It's clearly written, the language isn't dry and academic, and it's full of useful examples and reference tables. It opens up all the possibilities of the Korn shell - in fact, I've abandoned my plans to learn Perl as I've found I can do all the things I wanted/hoped/wished in ksh. And as for the s/ware on the CD - yes, mine wouldn't install either, but I rang and was directed to a version that was a free , non-commercial version (even though it calls itself evaluation), which I'm still using now to develop things at home on 95 before testing them more extensively on a unix system at work.

This is easily the best KornShell reference I've ever read. I have a number of other technical reference books, and this one puts them all to shame. It's well organised for either experienced or new programmers and the examples are clear and easy to understand. Rosenberg writes with a lively and informative style and this makes understanding the detail much easier. This is the gold standard for technical writing against which other books should be measured. My only (very small) criticism is that it does not cover some very advanced topics, but this book is still the first book I reach for when I have a KornShell question.
