Product Description

Review
Having conducted a major thematic inspection of police probationer training in 2001, and produced the report Training Matters... I know how important it is to make learning accessible, easy to understand, and attractive. This book is a welcome contribution, and I commend it to the reader s RA Field-Smith MBE MA FCIPD FCMI, HM Inspector of Police Training, Surrey

Product Description
This new book provides a highly readable, practical overview of the structure, concepts and workings of the police force in England & Wales. It offers a comprehensive foundation to the basic concepts that new recruits will encounter during their initial training periods and in the workplace, as well as highlighting some key issues and theories that will be built upon in later training. It will be a significant tool in helping them prepare for forthcoming training - allowing each recruit to start assuming some responsibility for his/her own professional development from an early stage. Written in a concise and approachable style, the book will also be a useful guide to anyone considering a career in the police force or interview candidates wishing to prepare themselves for interview.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only thing wrong is the title, 12 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Whilst the title of this book will mean that it is targeted primarily by people who are interested in joining the police or who are awaiting parts of their application being processed, it should also be read by so many more people than this!

Anyone who's thinking of joining would find it useful in its description of the police set-up and how the police services are organised and anyone preparing for interview would find some excellent food for thought regarding what it really takes to be a police officer. It also serves as an excellent primer in the law and procedure for the potential officer and a good - very basic - overview of criminal offences and points to prove.

If you already know any law or are already a serving officer you wouldn't find this book useful at all but it would really benefit a general reader that wants to know a bit more about the UK police without reading an enormous tome on the subject or anyone at any stage of the recruitment process (not just someone who's had a firm offer, as they suggest).

It's written in an easy to read style and has really helpful examples and points to consider throughout. The layout is very clear and chapters laid out logically. The book also reinforces knowledge by referring back to points covered earlier in the book (but not in an annoying or obtrusive way) and includes suggestions for further reading and web-links.

I'd say this book is a must for the potential recruit and rather better than most other general 'introduction to the police'-type books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but needs updating on legal issues, 7 Jan 2007
By Big Uig (London) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent little book overall and acts as a good intro to police culture and requirements. However, there is a problem in that much of the legal stuff has been overtaken by events and needs serious updating. The 2003 edition has been reprinted in 2006 without any amendment. For example, the 2006 edition still talks of the concept of arrestable offence which has now been replaced, NCS and NCIS are still there but no mention of SOCA, etc, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to succeed, 2 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Any person seriously considering a career in the police should have a copy of this book. In a crisp and readble style it gives non nonsence bullet points that are critical to the foundations of modern policing. Those who think that PC Plod is alive and well should study this edition. Today's police need to be thinking, responsible and understanding if they are to cope with the challenges of policing in the 21st century. This introduction to the career provides a leap onto the ladder that unlike some that exclude non graduates, can take a committed person to the top. It is digestable, written with a light touch but is a fund of factual material essential to the aspiring bobby. Every recruit should have this. For anyone considering a job protecting people and property through policing this is a must have publication.
