Product Description

Product Description
A quick-reference guide to authors and their works. The focus is on the general canon of British literature from the fifteenth century to the present. There is also some coverage of non-fiction such as biographies, memoirs, and science, as well as inclusion of major American, Commonwealth, and other foreign writers. The dictionary is in three sections: Section I: Authors Index - A-Z listing of authors, with nationality and birth/death dates, followed by a listing of their titles arranged chronologically by date of publication. Section II: Titles Index - A-Z listing of titles included in Section I, with date of publication and author's name. Section III: Character Index - selected index of literary characters, focusing on major works from Sections I and II. Users will be able to identify authors from a known title; verify or establish publication date of a particular work; review the main output of a particular author at a glance; verify/establish birth/death dates of an author; locate well-known literary characters in the works in which they appear. What was the Artful Dodger's real name? How many novels did Philip Larkin publish? When was Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince published? How many characters called Angelo are there in Shakespeare's plays? Was Orwell's Animal Farm published before or after Nineteen Eighty-Four?

4.0 out of 5 stars Reprint?, 14 April 2009
Although I am able to provide a list of 40+ factual errors in this work,
(some of them hilarious - see example below) it nevertheless has value for reference and it seems unfortunate that it has not been reissued since its first appearance in April 2001.

Example of unfortunate slip:
P 133, under "Guarini". "Il Pastor Fido" is translated as "Fido the shepherd" - whereas, of course, it means "the faithful shepherd".
(Fido may possibly have been his dog?)
