John Cannon CBE is Emeritus Professor of Modern History, University of Newcastle. His many publications include The Whig Ascendancy (1981), The Blackwell Dictionary of Historians (1988), The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy (1988), and Samuel Johnson and the Politics of Hanoverian England (1994).
