Oxford have excelled in recent times with their essential range of 'Companions' on various subjects. I think in particular of the Oxford Companion to Irish History, to Irish Literature, and to Trollope. The range of experts which OUP is able to call upon in order to compile these works is second to none, and they often become essential tools for anyone with a professional or dilettante interest in the given subject. In relation to Scottish History, I consider myself very much in the latter category, and yet even I am familiar with most of the big names involved in the making of volume. Michael Lynch, the editor, has already produced one of the standard text books on Scottish History, and here he manages to cover almost every conceivable time period and subject in the history of this northern Kingdom. From a personal point of view, I was happy to see that the impact made upon Scotland by Scandinavia, not only the Vikings and Norsemen but later trading links, was well covered in sections by Barbara Crawford, David Ditchburn and Steve Murdoch, all leaders in the field. That our northern periphery should not escape the attention of this book is typical, however, because all issues, people and places which have impinged on Scotland over the last couple of thousand years are contained within its pages. Relations with England, the impact of Ireland, the Highland Question, issues of schooling and education, demography and the dichotomy of rural and urban life, are all expounded with great clarity by the leading experts. The difficult issue of religion in Scotland is also treated with uncommon lucidity. As someone with an interest in Scotland, who often finds herself asking 'what exactly does that mean?' when reading histories of specific times or events, I shall let this book be, as the title suggests, my constant 'companion'.

Very different in format from the Oxford Companion to British History I feel this should be reissued with the title "Themes in Scottish History". With this book instead of having an A to Z of items you have a collection of themes and an index.The selection of themes is apparently random so that if you look up Mackintosh in the "themes" i.e. the main body of the book you will find Mackintosh J P but not Charles Rennie. But if you go the index at the back you will find no reference to J P Mackintosh though you will find Charles Rennie but then you have to go to "archtitects, artists and craftsmen;architectural styles and features;culture" to find out more

The content of the book is fine, but accessing it is a nightmare. If you want to know a specific fact about Scottish History I suggest you look it up in the Oxford Companion to British History. You will probably find it there and it will take a quarter of the time.
