4.0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary, some minor niggles, 23 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This dictionary is exactly what an English speaker beginning Chinese needs. Finally I have an English-Chinese section that doesn't define words for a Chinese speaker, but in a manner which allows an English speaker to translate easily into Chinese. It's easy to read, logically laid out and accessible. The example chinese sentences are also in reasonably large characters so you don't have to get a magnifying glass out to read them. The vocabulary building panels (which bring together essential words in key language areas) are a great idea, and the grammar boxes which explain difficult points of usage are also very useful. But possibly the greatest thing about this dictionary is that it lists the appropriate measure word with each noun in it's definition, the lack of which is a frustration with every other Chinese dictionary I've used.

On the down side, although the vocabulary building panels are a great idea, it would be nice to have more of them (for instance colours, seasons, clothing, directions and positions, types of shops and businesses...). It would also be useful to have the traditional character equivalent along with the simplified forms. There are also a small number of errors in the tones indicated. As this is a beginner's dictionary it could also be valuable to put each character in larger text with the stroke order indicated... but this is really nit-picking.

In conclusion, this is a very good dictionary and is rapidly becoming very well thumbed. If edition 2 could be slightly larger that would be even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars my most used text, , my chinese friends also find useful, 28 April 2005
Having embarked of the huge task of learning this fascinating and challenging language, with language tapes, text books and all the Paraphernalia, I keep falling back to this well constructed tome. It has an admitedly limited vocabulary however it goes beyond being a simple dictionary by being a guide to usage.the grammar notes are good, and a further plus the Chinese characters are for the most part large enough to see. Something most books neglect. this book is in the living room by day, and the bedroom by night. I have two other great dictionaries for a more extensive vocabulary, however, this is THE essential first dictionary, well done all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent usage examples, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer
The strength of the book is the numerous examples of usage, i.e. how to say things in the right way in Chinese, which helps beginners avoid speaking in English syntax with Chinese vocabulary. Also, the different senses of each word are distinguished clearly with examples. These features make it very user-friendly and helpful for students at the beginners to intermediate levels to learn how to build sentences in Chinese.

However, since the lexicon is quite small, people should consider supplementing this dictionary with another with a larger number of words.
