Product Description
Book Description
With the publication of Volume 2: The Suboscine Passerines, The Birds of South America now covers all the true songbirds of this exotic region. Following the same format as the first volume, on the oscine passerines, Volume 2 encompasses more than one-thousand species, from ovenbirds and woodcreepers to cotingas. Fifty-two new colour plates by Guy Tudor illustrate most of the species, while the text provides extensive information on habitats, ranges, habits, and voices.
The distribution maps, based on published sources and recent observations, have been especially prepared for this volume. Most importantly, the authors combine review and analysis with extensive field observations to give an unparalleled portrait of South American birds and a landmark publication in neotropical ornithology.

Synopsis
The Birds of South America, Volume 2: The Suboscine Passerines completes the field handbook to all the true songbird species begun in Volume 1: The Oscine Passerines and follows the same format. Volume 2 encompasses more than one-thousand species, from ovenbirds and woodcreepers to cotingas. Fifty-two beautiful colour plates, meticulously researched for soft-part colours and perching attitudes, provide a definitive visual record of most of the species and are arranged to show the relationships of different groups to each other. The text provides extensive information on the habitat, range, habits, and voices of the birds. The distribution maps, based on published sources and recent observations, have been especially prepared for this volume. Most importantly, the authors combine review and analysis with extensive field observations to give an accurate, incisive portrait of the birds in nature. This series is without doubt a landmark publication in neotropical ornithology.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first attempt to cover South America, 1 Oct 2001
By A Customer
A good first attempt to cover the birds of South America in a format that is usable by the ornithologist, unfortunately this book is now starting to look a little dated in the light of the recent influx of more complete guides to the individual countries. The main fall down of this book is its failure to illustrate all of the species covered in the text, leaving you to rely on the adequate text. It now seems unlikely that this, once pioneering, series will ever be completed, which in itself is a shame, although it is unlikely to ever compete with the more thorough and cheaper guides that are now available.
