"A splendidly illustrated reference guid...stunning photography...a wonderfully browsable companion"

Review

This is a fantastic, thorough and easy to read encyclopedia, useful for anyone who wants a complete reference-in-one. (BTO News )

The new book has taken a different approach altogether

A completely new and updated reference book ... weighty and attractive this book has been greatly enlarged, the contents completely re-written and the layout totally changed. (BTO News )

The new book has taken a different approach altogether by focusing on the families. Each family has its own section with a very interesting essay on features, behaviour and lifestyles lavishly illustrated with photographs and paintings. (BTO News )

A splendidly illustrated reference guide ... stunning photography ... a wonderfully browsable companion. (The Scotsman )

A magnificent new book ... beautifully illustrated. (Derwent May, The Times )

... the information is fascinating, and the illustrations lavish, a beautiful book in every sense. (Nick Chang, Focus )

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, 30 Jan 2006
It is not easy to cram a description of 10,000 species into one book. What this book does brilliantly however, is introduce the reader into the world of birds through Orders and Families. Birds belonging to any such family are described in detail and their relation to other species in the same family or order are examined. Their evolution and closest cousins are also pointed out. The photographs are of the highest order, and there are plenty. Some species or topics, such as Kakapo conservation, are allocated extra sections.

The overall feeling is that this books is of great help in understanding the habitat, habits and ecology of groups of birds and their relationships without getting bogged down in species identification. I dont know how long it has taken to come up with this book but it is certainly worth buying.
