Synopsis
Architecture reflects the spirit of its times, and in India the fight for independence. In the late 19th and early-20th centuries the British sought to reflect the aims of imperialism in architectural form while Indian architects aimed at retaining their Indianness. Examining the forces that have shaped Indian architecture through these times, this profusely illustrated book traces the patterns of architecture and its response to political change in both India and the world since the founding of the Indian National Congress in the 1880s.
