3.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of facts, not a lot of imagination, 15 Feb 2007
By Stephen Engelhard (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For a book on 'Landscapes of the Imagination', this is curiously short of magic and excitement. It will appeal to anyone like me with an existing fascination with the mountains, for its comprehensive factual information. But the writing style is pedestrian and the content is predictable. And the cultural history it presents is all about the encounters of visiting rulers, bishops, climbers, tourists and celebrities with the mountains, with next to nothing about the people who have lived there for centuries. It also has a rather anglo-centric emphasis on the history of English connections with the Alps. If you would like to have your imagination fired, Robert Macfarlane's 'Mountains of the Mind' is a much more interesting read.
