Product Description

After more than twenty-five years in print, A New History of India continues to be the most readable and popular one-volume history of India available. This seventh edition has been entirely redesigned and includes new illustrations, bibliographic material, and an updated final chapter reflecting the significant social, political, and economic issues that have arisen since the year 2000. Wolpert condenses 4,000 years of India's history into a graceful and engaging book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written, 30 May 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: A New History of India (Paperback)
A New History of India is an indispensable book for those who want to gain a thorough understanding of Indian history. As an A-Level Indian History Student, I find it useful particularly its description of modern Indian History. It also contains insightful opinions over each contentious issues, especially the profound impact of 2 world wars and the repercussion of partition, which inspire me a lot.

For those who would like to obtain lucid description of India, India: A History by John Keay is also an highly recommended book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the history of India, 15 Feb 2009

This review is from: A New History of India (Paperback)
Stanley Wolpert's New History of India is thoroughly researched and impartial - an essential introduction both to India and to his other more specialist books on the subcontinent and its great figures and moments in history. If I have a criticism, it is only that his style is a touch pedestrian, but the book is readable for all that.
