Product Description

Product Description

Trichotillomania, one of the family of obsessive-compulsive disorders, may afflict as many as six to eight million people in the US alone. This is a guide to the syndrome, filled with reassuring advice for patients and their families. Endorsed by the Trichotillomania Learning Center, the handbook includes all the information a patient or relative needs to understand the illness and to cope with it. Dr Penzel provides a detailed discussion of causes and he reviews all the treatment options, describing the most effective medications and their side effects, as well as the recommended cognitive and behavioural treatments. He shows patients how to design a self-help programme and gain control of their compulsive behaviour, and how to prevent relapse. He describes trichotillomania and its treatment in children, and suggests coping strategies for families at home and in public situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book you've been pulling your hair out to find., 4 Aug 2003
By MISS J ROOS (Cheltenham) - See all my reviews
Trichotillomania strikes fear into those who do not know or understand it. This is the perfect antedote; Penzel, an authority on obsessive-compulsive disorders, informs the naive reader and supports the struggling surivivor of Trich. He writes concisely, although he writes easily and is very readable. There is little jargon, and is written from a supportive non-judgemental view point. This book is also an essential buy for healthcare professionals; it guides you in like the beautrix potter of psychology. There are courses of therapy, mainly cognitive behavioural therapy which can be used by both practitioner and patient. Penzel explores the physiology, psychology and behaviour of hair-pulling and tops it off with questionnaires and scales, and the must have DSM (diagnostic statistical manual)classification for Trichotillomania, for those pulling their hair out for a diagnosis.

Summary: Informative, concise,interesting and essential.
Reviewer: Assistant Psychologist, Cheltenham.

5.0 out of 5 stars The world's first helpful self-help book!, 16 Mar 2004
THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT TO MOST BOOKS ON OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE AND RELATED DISORDERS. It combines helpful, un-patronising advice and equally helpful reallife stories. It is written in an easy to read way, without emitting important information, and with a good dose of humour too!

I can't stress how strongly I would recommend this book to other hair pullers; if nothing else it made me realise I wasn't alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help is at hand, 2 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Having suffered from TTM for 35 years I was pleased to find a book that covered all the feelings and frustration I have been experiencing. The book is structured in a such a way that shows the reader successful ways in overcoming the problem. It is also designed towards the family, especially parents whose children may have the disorder. I wish my mum had this book when I was growing up!
A very imformative read, hard to put down.
