Product Description

Product Description

In many cases, lupus patients receive only a cursory explanation of their disease and a brief discussion of its management. They have no idea what to expect and have many questions. Daniel Wallace wrote this book for them and their physicians. Rheumatology textbooks and lupus monographs are available at medical libraries, but the information is not presented in a way that patients and their families can easily understand. Support groups publish excellent pamphlets on various aspects of the disorder, but these are often superficial and do not explain in detail the disease's mechanisms or put therapies in their proper context. Several books have appeared for the lay audience, but, for the most part, they are either outdated, describe personal struggles, or concern themselves with promoting coping strategies. Ultimately, there is a great need for this book. As a physician who specializes in Rheumatology and has special interest in lupus, Daniel Wallace tried to anticipate patients' and caregivers' questions with the most up-to-date information now available on causes, prevention, cure, exercise, diet, and many other important topics. This book is a distillation of his experience in treating over a thousand lupus patients, and it is meant to be both informative and enjoyable to read. While it is not meant to be a substitute for advice given by a physician or specialist, it is a valuable resource for those who are interested in how various aspects of the disease are approached.

First Sentence
The first time someone hears the words "lupus erythematosus," he or she usually says "What?" When I first started my practice, patients identified the term with Peter Lupus, one of the characters on Mission Impossible, a popular television series in the late 1960s. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Best Book on Lupus on the Market Today!, 13 Jul 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lupus Book (Hardcover)
I've got lupus. I buy every book and phamplet I can find. I never ever found anything so comprehensive as this book. Whether you're an expert or a novice, this book is for you - anyone can understand it. Finally something is on the market that digs deeper than generalities and provides the details you need to manage your illness, help identify your symptoms, and reassure you in ways few Doctors can. Its a SUPER BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book about lupus available., 1 Dec 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lupus Book (Hardcover)
I have recommended this book to numerous people to help them understand their illness better. Dr. Wallace has written this book in terms that a lay person can understand, but never 'talks down' to the reader. This book is an excellent tool for arming oneself in being their own patient advocate. The information can allow you to converse with your heath care provider, working with them to achieve the best care for you. Having read many books about this disease which I have had for the last 10 years, I am pleased with the extensive coverage of the many symptoms and ways that lupus can manifest itself. A very helpful and useful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Written in clear easy to understand language. Informative., 16 Dec 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lupus Book (Hardcover)
If you or someone close to you has been just diagnosed with Lupus and you feel confused, this book will do much to clear up your confusion, and answer all those questions that are lingering in the back of your mind. "The Lupus Book" is written in clear and easy to understand language and covers almost all areas related to Lupus including illness that Lupoids tend to have. The categories are seperate and distinct, thus eliminating the confusion that sometimes prevails when reading a medical text.

after reading Wallace, you need to read DeBartolo's "Lupus Underground." Wallace only covers the toxic drugs used today, DeBartolo keys in on a new drug-less cutting edge therapy.
