Product Description

Product Description

The revised and expanded fifth edition of "Modern Latin America" offers a survey text for undergraduate courses in 20th century Latin American history and politics. The authors have added socio-cultural sectors and boxes to nearly every chapter, and all political and economic information has been brought up-to-date. As in earlier editions, the authors use an in-depth case study approach that guides students through the major countries of Latin America, highlighting central themes such as European-New World interaction, racial mixtures, military takeovers, and US intervention in the area.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-written and very comprehensive introduction, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book about Modern Latin America is a well-written and, in its newest edition, extremely up-to-date introductory text. Although mainly aimed at undergraduate students, it also gives postgraduate students a very good overview about Latin America. With each chapter focussing on a different country, the book is an essential guide to understand the historical and political background of current Latin American affairs. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars US Perspective, 26 Mar 2008
By Matt Matt (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Modern Latin America (Paperback)
This book is written by very insightful writers, and it's written in a very clear and easy to understand way.

But I think it's written only with US college students in mind. For example, the book starts off by explaining why it's useful to learn about Latin America - and the answer is that it's important to US trade, etc etc a long list of US centric reasons. The book does not always defend the US position on every issue, it does give alternative ways of viewing issues, but the angle is always related to the US in some way.

As a non-US reader wanting to focus on Latin America I found the choice of angle tiresome. I got through 1/3, then I put this book down and started on another. So I would only recommended it to North American readers, wanting the story relating Latin America to the US.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Latin America, 12 Nov 2005
This review is from: Modern Latin America (Paperback)
This book is pretty good. Divided neatly into countries it is easy to fast-forward straight to finding exactly what you want to in this book. The book expects no prior knowledge of the geographical area, economics or histories of this vast area, and gives concise, useful information, meaning it would be ideal for any undergraduate studying Latin America. I have found it complements my studies really well.
