Product Description

Book Description
The revolution in psychiatry that began mid-century has led to dramatic advances in the understanding and treatment of manic-depressive illness. No other mental disorder has been the subject of such clinically useful and scientifically productive research. This book is the first to survey this massive body of evidence comprehensively and to assess its meaning for both clinician and scientist. The book also vividly portrays the experience of manic-depressive illness from the
perspective of patients, their doctors, and researchers. It also recounts the torments of some of the great poets and composers whose art was almost certainly enriched, energized, and deepened by the extremes of manic-depressive illness. Drawing on the widsom of classic psychiatric authors, the book encompasses knowledge about manic-depressive illness as Kraepelin originally defined it. Drs Goodwin and Jamison's understanding of the illness, gained from their own extensive research and clinical
experience, guided their interpretation of the literature. Like Kraepelin, they emphasize the cyclical course of manic-depressive illness and the essential unity of its bipolar and recurrent unipolar forms. Encyclopaedic in scope, the book exhaustively reviews the biological and genetic literature that has so dominated the field in recent years. It also surveys the psychological and epidemiological evidence, as well as that pertaining to diagnostic issues, course, and outcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive resource on Bipolar Disorder., 1 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Goodwin and Jamison go far beyond any other authors in compiling information regarding manic depressive illness. From etiology, treatment, genetics, psychosocial factors and case studies, Manic Depressive Illness is a resource that every clinician treating bipolar disorder must have.I am in great anticipation of the 2nd edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most humane yet rigorous textbook in psychiatry, 7 Mar 1998
By A Customer
I bought and used this text for years before I came across Kay Jamison's autobiography, and found it to be outstandingly kind, compassionate, empathic, and understanding of its subjects in a way not seen in our field since the best writing of Freud. Having learned of Dr. Jamison's personal journey through manic depressive illness, I can more readily understand how this textbook came to be so inspired and inspiring. An excellent text for students, to teach compassion as well as science; perhaps quite technical for many sufferers and their family members, but worth the effort for those who want the very best in information about manic depression. -Phil Torrance MD (Diplomate in Psychiatry)

5.0 out of 5 stars The standard medical textbook on Manic-Depressive Illness, 29 Nov 1996
By A Customer
This is an invaluable resource for anyone with Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive Illness) or anyone who loves them. Though targeted at medical professionals, most of the information presented is well within the grasp of an intelligent and motivated layperson. I'm not a doctor of any sort, but I *do* have Bipolar Disorder, and take an active interest and role in my own health-care... this is a terrific book, and it summarizes what is known about the causes, treatment, and management of this disorder as of about 1990. (Hopefully, there will be an update soon!)
