Product Description

Product Description

This book advocates a new approach to pronunciation teaching, in which the goal is mutual intelligibility among non-native speakers, rather than imitating native speakers. It will be of interest to all teachers of English as an International Language, especially Business English. It proposes a basic core of phonological teaching, with controversial suggestions for what should be included.

5.0 out of 5 stars a reader from leeds, 12 Aug 2002

Fascinating and utterly convincing: a truly seminal publication
This is to my mind one of the most important books on the teaching of English pronunciation to second language learners to emerge for several years. It is bound to prove controversial, attacking as it does, many of the comfortable assumptions of those who adhere rigidly to standard language ideologies. In addition, Jenkins' enterprise is both vast and the first of its kind. This means that although her principle (a pronunciation core based on phonological intelligibility in interaction between non-native speakers) is in itself an excellent one, her findings - as she herself points out - cannot be considered definitive until further work has been carried out in the field. In the meantime, anyone with a sound understanding of sociolinguistic research methods will find Jenkins' methodology and reporting of her data fascinating and utterly convincing. This reader for one hopes that the book will be read widely and will encourage others to take up the EIL challenge. A truly seminal publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Academically stimulating, pedagogically useful, 22 April 2002
Dr. Jenkins adds to the Standard English and Core English debate with this very useful study of the pronunciation of English as international lingua franca. By taking what is actually comprehensible, rather than measuring pronunciation against often unattainable, so-called native speaker standards, Jenkins offers a way into establishing an international standard of English, not only in the area of phonology, but with immense possibilities for grammar and lexis.
On the practical side, Jenkins' work should at last liberate English language classrooms from the tyranny of RP and GA pronunciation and allow teachers to get on with the essential task of preparing learners for international communication.
Linguists, applied linguists, EL teachers and teacher educators can all benefit enormously from this excellent work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable and insightful, 22 April 2002
By A Customer
This is an indispensable and insightful book that uses groundbreaking research to address how the changing roles of English in the world affect language teachers' decisions to teach pronunciation. The book argues that, for most users of English in the world, neither achieving a native speaker accent nor having an accent that is understandable to a native speaker is an appropriate goal. Because most users of English do not speak with native speakers, Jenkins argues that decisions about English pronunciation teaching should be based on what nonnative speakers need to be understood when they use English as a lingua franca with other nonnative speakers. The book has many strengths. First among them is its well-reasoned attempt to address the role of intelligibility from the view of the actual users. Second, and more important, is the fact that it uses cutting edge research to support its recommendations. Pronunciation teaching is notoriously short on research data and long on mythology, and Jenkins goes a long way toward changing this with data demonstrating the importance of pronunciation errors in miscommunication.. Although the book's qualitative research paradigm is not common in linguistic research, it is widely accepted..
