Practical, sympathetic, and comprehensive, it provides mothers and fathers with all the information they need on pregnancy, birth, and the first year of the baby's life. The new edition incorporates all the latest developments in medical treatment, midwifery, and baby care. Specifically there is detailed new information on: diet, risks of salmonella infection, fetal heart monitoring, ultrasound, methods of detecting abnormality, risks of transmitting HIV, pain relief during labour, bottlefeeding formulas, guidelines for preventing cot-death, how to recognize meningitis, parents with disabilities, and a completely new section on immunization. Everything you need to know, from conception to the end of the baby's first year. This book is intended for pregnant women.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very factual but...., 3 Aug 2000
By Hayley Boland "Hayles" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The breadth of topics relating to childbirth in this book is far superior to many others, particularly in the area of birth planning and choosing a home birth. The difficulty I have with this, and many other books examining childbirth, is the lack of appreciation of just how painful labour usually is. I appreciate the positive attitude the book is attempting to instill in women approaching labour, however, after having two children, one with and one without pain relief, I am always left feeling that I have rather exaggerated the whole labouring issue. Despite it's best intentions, it definitely fails to offer empathy in this area and can leave a woman who demands pain relief at 2cm dilated feeling like a failure. With all this in mind, this still has to be the most empowering guide for pregnant women. The list of resources is invaluable in developing ante and postnatal support.

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible for new and prospective parents, 9 May 2000
By A Customer
The National Childbirth Trust is the UK's largest charity for new parents and this book is a must read if you are pregnant. It covers all the options and examines your choices for pregnancy, birth and parenthood in a frank but non-judgmental way. Factually accurate without imposing a perspective on any aspect, this book is brilliant for helping you to come to your own decisions. From conception to pain relief to birth positions to breastfeeding and all possible permutations in-between this is a baby bible for people who want to explore their choices.
