"This handsomely produced volume...offers reliable texts, intelligent notes that reflect the editors' concern for students reading Milton for the first time and the needs of general readers."--George W. Bahlke, Hamilton College
"Remarkable--an affordable text with such a rich offering."--Richard Y. Duerden, Brigham Young University

Product Description

This edition offers all Milton's English and Italian poetry and most of his Latin and Greek poetry, arranged in accordance with dates of publication, together with a generous sampling of the prose, including the complete texts of "Areopagitica", "Of Education", "The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates", "The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce", "The Ready and Easy Way" and selections from the "Second Defence of the English People", "An Apology for Smectymnuus" and "Christian Doctrine". Annotations gloss difficulties in syntax and vocabulary, provide historical information and identify classical and biblical allusions. The text has been freshly edited and is modernized. The introduction traces both Milton's changing conception of his vocation and the critical fortunes of his work over the past three centuries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good edition, bad binding, 14 April 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent edition of John Milton's works; it includes all the major works (Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes) and several of his sonnets, other poems, and prose tracts. The notes are thourough, although they are arranged at the back rather than footnoted. This cleans up the body of the text, but also requires constant flipping of pages. And the pages do not hold together well. After a few weeks of use, mine were beginning to fall out! It is a good, affordable volume; but if you are planning a serious study, expect it to fall apart sooner or later.
