Product Description

Book Description

The sparkling start of a new quartet. A fantastic array of children, adults, animals and strange and magical beasts battle the evil shapeshifter Kullervo, who wants to destroy the planet . . .

Product Description

When Connie is sent to live with her aunt, she knows it's going to be one more place where she doesn't fit in. But soon she realises how wrong she is. The seaside town is full of adults and children who have strange links to creatures. It's the heart of the secret Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures, a group of people sworn to ensure that mythical beasts are kept safe. Normally the creatures and their chosen humans work in harmony. But something abnormal is happening here. The Sirens, who for generations have kept their deadly song to themselves, are once again luring humans to their deaths. It doesn't take long for Connie to realise that the victims are oil workers. The Sirens are fed-up with their seas being polluted, but should the Society protect the Sirens or the oil industry? Connie doesn't think she has a role to play, until it becomes clear that she's a Universal - the first person in over a century who can communicate with every type of beast on earth and in the air. Her power is immense. It corrupted the previous Universal . . . and now he's back. And he'll use any means he can - from violence to the terrifying Storm Giants - to turn Connie to the dark side.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Secret of the Sirens, 1 Jun 2006
I knew from the moment I opened "the secret of the sirens" that it was going to be on of those books that really grips you. And I was right, It was wonderful.
The storyline of the book begins with the main character, Connie, playing with and talking to the birds, and ofcourse this is a rather peculiar beginning, I know, but it still gripping.
As the story goes on the plot deepens into a twist of magic and mystery.
I rated this book 5/5 ecause the story is so brilliant you simply have to read it. i would strongly advise this book so just buy it and read it!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Society for the Preservation of Mythical Animals, 20 April 2006
By M. Wright "dragonholt" (Mansfield, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was impressed with this book. There was a confidence to the narrative that quite gripped this cynical adult reader. Yes, the conflict between 'progress' as demonstrated by a suitably empty-eyed human villain and environmental issues are not new, but the way it is interwoven with the fantasy plot is well done.

It is good to see characters that appear to be three-dimensional': so often in books written for children there is an assumption that 2-D characters are sufficient that it is a pleasure to come across a book where the characters are quite convincing.

The good versus evil, while not new, has some interesting twists - sirens are probably considered evil, yet here, they are given quite human-like emotions. The Trustees are the ones I would like to meet, human and Myth. The treatment of the mythical animals is so in keeping the reader finds it easy to step beyond into that which is possible.

However, the website fizzled out . . .

I will be reading the others in the sequence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sirens, dragons, selkies - and a wonderful adventure!, 23 Mar 2006
By A Customer
What a wonderful adventure story. Set in the modern-day world, but with mythological creatures hiding in every wood and stream, this is an incredibly appealing idea with a wonderful heroine, Connie, who can communicate with all animals and mythological creatures. A lovely, lovely book. And the first of a series too - can't wait for the next one!
