5.0 out of 5 stars One of a Kind, 11 Dec 2004
By A Customer
'Unique' is a gripping story of a boy who, at 15, discovers his past has been hidden from him, by his manipulative father. Dominic Gordon has been highly criticised by his father, by not living up to the supreme standards set for him. Dominic, excelling in art, has been struggling in science - and his father is determined to make him get better at it. Dominic hated his father for not praising him for anything, and took refuge at Pop's house to help his grandfather so as to help calm himself in the process.
But when Dominic discovers he has a brother, he is taken over by curiosity, to find the truth about his brother, and why he has never been told of him by his parents. He travels to Cambridge University to find out all he can of his brother, and, in the mix of it all - finding out why his father was so intent on him being good at science.
A book written through the eyes of a character who learns he is no more than a replacement, a re-make, a clone.
Escaping his father, his 'creator', and the curious media; helping his mother, Pop's and his friends. Dominic has a lot on his hands in this enthralling book. An excellent 'can't be put down' book which stands as one of the best novels of 2004. Unique. What it's like not to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book, 11 Jan 2007
Unique is billed as a book for children, but it is one of the new generation of books for children that cross over effortlessly into adult literature.

And it's far ahead of the rest of the pack - Rowling and Pullman included. Alison Allen-Gray has real strengths in both characterisation and plot - and she has taken on a big and important theme here, human cloning. Her treatment of it is fascinating.

Read it, and give it to your friends. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner, 11 Jan 2007

This book was deservedly shortlisted for almost every 'children's' book award in 2005/6 and won the Stockport prize. It's a pacy thriller that also manages to be intelligent and thought-provoking. Set one step into the future, it explores issues to do with cloning and asks the universal question: What, ultimately, makes you, you?
A fabulous read for any teenager.
