5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant characters, contemporary issues, lots of action, 5 Mar 2006
This review is from: Ryland's Footsteps (Paperback)
Ryland's Footsteps is just like a totally cool book. One of the main themes of the book is a very contemporary issue and it really makes you think about. But it's also a lot of fun. It has some brilliant characters, all very different and even the smallest characters who only get one or two mentions are real people. There's even a gay couple in it and a whole house full of prostitutes. Brilliant! The hero Rye is a fairly ordinary but not boring boy of about 11, it's very easy to identify with him even though he's in a situation that's not exactly everyday. He's like totally mad on excavators but even that's interesting and there's a well funny bit at the beginning when Rye runs away from his mum because he's seen an excavator. Rye has two friends called Kris who is an offlander and believes in magic and Stefanie who's been dumped on the island and is living with the prostitutes. (She's not one though, none of them are interested in that sort of thing yet.) They're all very different but all the strange things on the island bring them together in a very realistic way. The writing is good, there's lots of action in this book, lots of strange accidents and magic and it's really exciting, it's like really being on the island.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't grab me, 5 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ryland's Footsteps (Paperback)
This was hyped a lot but it didn't really grab me. The main character didn't seem sympathetic, didn't seem like anyone I wanted to know about. It was in some ways an original idea and in some ways well written but the whole book seemed to lack feeling and emotion. I ended up skipping it, never did get to finish it.
