Product Description
Synopsis
The last gnomes in Britain live by a Warwickshire brook. Their names are Dodder, Baldmoney, Cloudberry, and Sneezewort, and their home is under an oak tree which grows on the banks of the Folly. Cloudberry decides to go and explore - he wants to find out what lies beyond the Folly. But when he doesn't return, it is up to his three remaining brothers to build a boat and set out to find him. This is the story of the brothers' epic journey in search of Cloudberry and is set against the background of the English countryside, beginning in spring, continuing through summer, and concluding in autumn, when the first frosts are starting to arrive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun & excitement for children of all ages., 24 Sep 2001
From the first page you join the world of the stream, and all its occupants. It is funny, sad and exciting as you follow the adventures of three brothers (the last of the little folk)as they travel up stream to find their lost brother Cloudberry.
While it could be frightening in places for very small children, children from 5 - 95 are sure to love every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Am I the oldest reader............?, 27 Feb 2005
By sueb "sueb34" (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
I sat enthralled exactly 46 years ago whilst Mrs Greenwood read this to her class of 9 year olds!
Since, I have read it to my son (who keeps a copy in his bathroom!!) to this day and last night I began reading it to his daughter whose eyes were like saucers.
This is an absolutely timeless tale. Unlike so many modern books, it teaches as well as entertains. Every page is packed with information about British flora and fauna - indeed, the elves' names are all flowers: Dodder, Sneezewort and Baldmoney.
Its a classic adventure tale of good against bad and the overcoming of insuperable odds to win through in the end.
I cannot recommend it highly enough - if I could give it more than 5 stars I surely would.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best children's books I've ever read, 3 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is quite simply one of the best children's books I've ever read-it is a magical tale of gnomes in search of their lost brother and the adventures they encounter along the way. I am delighted the book is about to be re-printed;this is long overdue in my view. I see that the sequel, "Down the Bright Stream," is also about to be re-printed and I've just pre-ordered that too, as I have not previously managed to obtain it.

Buy this book-you won't be disappointed !!
