Synopsis

Set during the second World War, this classic novel tells the storey of Selina, who has been sent to live with her aunt, uncle, and cousins in the country. When Selina receives a parcel from her godmother in America it causes much excitement among her and her cousins, and, to Selina's delight, the parcel contains a beautiful party dress and a pair of party shoes. 4.0 out of 5 stars Children with ambition, 15 Sep 2001
By A Customer
The family in this book seem close to the family of the author as she descibes them in her autobiographical works. However as it's fiction they're all allowed more freedom. The book's plot centres around the production of a pagent. But as usual with Noel Streafield it's her characters that are the most engaging part of the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Party Frock now reissued as Party Shoes, 17 May 2006
By Marg E (Abingdon, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Party Shoes (Paperback)
I read this book as a girl and it was and remains my all time favourite children's book.

It's fast paced and clearly evokes the atmosphere of English childrens' life at the end of the war (a bit before my time.) The book catches you up with excitement as the plans for writing, rehearsing and performing the pageant take shape.

However, I do think renaming the book was a little silly. Selina is given a dress and matching shoes but making an opportunity to wear the dress was what the whole story was about.
