Product Description

Product Description
Recent developments in methods of contraception have presented women with a wider range of options than ever before. At the same time, however, scare stories - particularly about the Pill - have spread anxiety and confusion. In this third edition of Contraception, Anne Szarewski and John Guillebaud assess all the evidence, including the new guidelines which were issued by the Committee of Safety of Medicines (CSM) in May 1999 following a review of the 1995 scare stories. They describe the latest methods, including new types of condoms, Persona, and Mirena, and cut through the conflicting information to give you the clearest and most reliable advice you will find anywhere. From reviews of previous editions: 'A model of clearly presented, unpatronising, up-to-the- minute information ... the current definitive book on the subject.' Vogue 'Excellent.' British Journal of Family Planning 'Essential reading for anyone thinking of changing their family planning method.' Woman 'this is the book to buy ... Written by expert gynaecologists... with textbook clarity, it's one of the most comprehensive guides around... an invaluable book.' Health and Fitness

3.0 out of 5 stars getting out of date, 21 Jul 2005
Unfortunately in the medical world, things rapidly get out of date and this is no exception. Since this book was published there have been several new developments in contraception, such as the new pills Yasmin and Cerazette, Evra the contraceptive patch, and new research on the safety of other methods. It's worth investing in a newer book or at least discussing thoroughly with your doctor before making a decision based on any book written prior to 2004.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written and user-friendly, 5 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This is an invaluable resource for anyone trying to decide on a method of contraception. It is well laid out, easy to read and gives you the facts you need simply and clearly, backed up with clinical evidence. Highly recommended. If you want more detailed information, John Guillebaud's "Contraception: Your Questions Answered" is fantastic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy but get it 2nd hand, 12 Oct 2008
This book is an essential read particularly when you find out that condom failure is about 3%, rising to 10% for those under the age of 30. It's good to browse over before you head off to the family planning clinic to give you the grounding in basic contraception. I was, frankly, stunned by what I didn't know. The text is easy to understand and clearly marks out the pros and cons of various methods of contraception. Sensible, sensible advice for those who like their information expertly presented. However, being published in 2000 it could do with more up to date information, so buy it 2nd hand get yourself up to speed and then head to the clinic. Best book I ever bought.
