Product Description

Product Description

This smart and thorough text offers a fresh and up-to-date-view of the dynamic nature of contemporary psychology. The authors build a strong foundation in the fundamentals of psychology while featuring the most innovative and groundbreaking research of our day. The authors are active researchers whose work has charted new territory in the psychology landscape. Organized around a discussion of the significant achievements of psychological research, this compelling text excites students as they discover psychology from the perspective of pioneering researcher. Also featured are debates by leading authorities over hotly contested issues in contemporary psychology. With plenty of supportive pedagogy, experiments are explained in engaging detail, and the charts and figures add to an understanding of the results. This text offers an integrated biological orientation, a trend that is changing the way psychological topics are viewed, exemplified by the coverage of bio-evolutionary research. While maintaining this orientation, the pedagogical structure of the new edition has been improved in response to reviewer feedback. Additions include a more robust collection of Core Concepts (Key Terms) throughout all chapters, in-text definitions of Core Concepts, interim review summaries at the end of every major section, critical thinking questions which test students' understanding of the content, and Concept Review Tables which consolidate important subjects into one table. Other additions include engaging chapter opening paragraphs and thorough coverage of gender and cross-cultural differences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 26 Oct 2003
By A Customer
I am a first year astudent studying psychology and i was advised to read this book before i started. having had no experience of psychology i was somewhat frightened of the subject. However the authors careful explanations of each aspect of psychology really prepared me for my first year. it does not go into asd much depth that one could use the book for studying for a whole degree I would however recommend it to anyone who is either interested in psychology or like myself wanting to prepare yourself for a degree in psychology.
congratulations to the authors for they have definetely hit the jackpot.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10/10 - Cannot rate it highly enough, 6 July 2006

I bought this book during my first year as a psychology student and it has earned its price tag back and then some. It has a huge range of topics from memory to vision and it includes several 2-page sections which debate over various issues from different viewpoints - something I have found occurs a LOT during a psychology degree. I suggest to anyone taking on a course involving psychology or someone just wanting an interesting read that they should get this book. It helped me in almost every paper I wrote - particularly with introductions and conclusions. If you only buy one psychology book make it this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best comprehensive book of psychology, 29 Dec 2007
By Rasih Bensan (Istanbul, Turkey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Atkinson and Hilgard is a very comprehensive book on psychology that covers just about every topic in the field. It is very nicely written, clear, easy to understand and very enjoyable to read provided that you are interested in the topic. The diagrams and pictures are in color, of high quality and very informative. The whole book is full of many such high quality pictures. The explanations are scientific and based on sound research. Opposing points of view and controversies are introduced at the end of each chapter. The book comes with a workbook and additional sources on the internet are listed at the end of each chapter. It is a long book, I have yet read the first several chapters and am already very motivated to go on. Although the title is introduction to psychology it is not a superficial book. I recommend that absolute beginners to psychology read shorter more basic books about psychology before reading this one, otherwise this book maybe a bit difficult to understand for them. That is what I did. I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to develop a comprehensive knowledge on psychology. It can also be used as a reference book, each chapter can be read selectively depending on what the rader wants to learn about. It is not obligatory to read each chapter in sequence. The organization is such that each chapter can be read independently like an encyclopedia.
Congratulations to the authors for writing such a clearly understandable and comprehensive book on a complicated subject.

One word of caution : if you are not a native speaker of English and wish to read a translation of this book in your mother tongue, make sure that the translated version is of high quality. I saw a translated edition in another language where it was completely black and white with very poor quality diagrams and pictures.
