5.0 out of 5 stars Gay Pride, 11 July 2003
I heard this book was amazing years ago, but it truley opened my eyes.

It tells of story of the prejudices and hardships of gay people in NZ within a minority group - Maaori. I was sadened to read of such prejudice although I really shouldnt have been surprised, people often turn away from things they fear.
It is easy to read and although it written about the changes and challenges within a particular family in NZ, it is still funny, well researched and I think an insight into the struggles people that are different in any way from the norm (gay, disabled, mentally ill) can face. It is written in a such a way to encourage those that are not gay to understand the courage it must take to 'come out' and acknowledges that sometimes the ways of old are not always right (so many cultures revere the past beliefs as sacred, without taking into account change and growth)
I found it easy to understand cause I am a Kiwi, although some people may be a little less understanding if they are not familiar with a marae setting, Maaori culture or of NZ at all. However, I think anyone that faces a challenge like this, could read this book to see how a family on the other side of the world dealt withit for better or worse.
