Product Description

Product Description
At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortunenor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all,it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

About the Author
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was extremely modest about her own genius but has become one of English literature's most famous women writers. She is the author of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. Gillian Beer is King Edward Professor of English at the University of Cambridge and President of Clare Hall.

First Sentence
Sir Walter Elliot, of Kellynch-hall, in Somersetshire, was a man who, for his own amusement, never took up any book but the Baronetage;1 there he found occupation for an idle hour, and consolation in a distressed one; there his faculties were roused into admiration and respect, by contemplating the limited remnant of the earliest patents;2 there any unwelcome sensations, arising from domestic affairs, changed naturally into pity and contempt. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Her greatest work, 27 May 2003
By Lovborg (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Less well-known than "Emma", "Pride and Prejudice" or "Sense and Sensibility", this is an absolute gem of a novel, and my favourite of all of Jane Austen's works. It has all the flair and comic brio of her other, more celebrated work, but a sadness and delicacy of tone that elevates it to a different level. Anne is a magnificent character, with an intelligence steeped in experience coupled with a good and true heart, and is at the centre of a novel that offers absolutely everything that you could wish for in a novel. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful love story, 6 Sep 2007
By little_miss_sunnydale (South Gloucestershire, England) - See all my reviews
I became a fan of Jane Austen's books several years ago whilst doing GCSE English Literature; `Emma' was the selected text and over time I moved on to the more well-known works, `Pride and Prejudice' and `Sense and Sensibility'. `Persuasion', which was Austen's last novel, was ironically the last novel of hers that I read and it is certainly my favourite Austen book. The story focuses on Anne Elliott, the second of three daughters of the pompous Sir Walter Elliott of Kellynch Hall. Years prior to when the novel starts Anne had falling in love with a young naval officer, Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded to reject him and they both parted. Now years later, circumstances arise that means Captain Wentworth comes back into her life, although this time he is far wealthier, they are both more mature and he does not appear to wish to renew their relationship. Simultaneously the mature and reflective Anne is forced to move from her family seat of Kellynch Hall to fashionable Bath, as Sir Walter, and his like minded daughter Elizabeth are unable to maintain a realistic income and their debts result in the family having to lease out their country home. Anne not only faces such changes but she is forced to see Wentworth's growing relationship with another woman and she too receives the attentions of another; her cousin Mr William Elliott.

`Persuasion' is a beautiful story concerning concepts of forgiveness, the effects of persuasion and of course the endurance of affections. In addition as per usual with Austen novels you can expect the typical wit, particularly in the form of various characters like the pompous Sir Walter and the petulant Mary Musgrove. I really recommend this book particularly to those who have enjoyed Austen's other novels. The highlight of the book has to be the wonderful letter Wentworth writes to Anne in chapter 23. It is a great love story and sadly overshadowed by Austen's other work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A more resigned, mature Austen writing, 13 Mar 2006
By Farz_B (London, England) - See all my reviews
This was the last of Austen's novels that I read, and accordingly, one of the last that Austen herself wrote, at a time when she was ill and resigned to bed months before her death. It was published posthumously, together with Northanger Abbey, an early novel that she wrote.

Reflecting this corresponding state in herself somehow, the book carries a tone of gravity and experienced maturity that Anne Elliot, the heroine, portrays with a love that is only reconciled many years after its initial formation and breakup. At 28, she is definitely the oldest of Austen's heroines, and thus we see a more constrained, yet delicate relationship between her and Frank Wentworth.

True to say, I enjoyed this book, as all other Austen's novels. One can readily notice the difference in tone and character from her earlier, more popular novels so do not be disheartened if it is not the usual sprightly plot or the young, gregarious heroine.

I have read most other Jane Austen books and been interested, but un-moved. Persuasion is a different class. By far the most moving of all her books IMHO.
