Product Description

Product Description
Although people see the Edwardian era as a golden age of peace, propsperity and tranquility, it was also one of hope and of new ideas, of inventions such as the radio and the aeroplane, and a fermant of activity in politics, social controversy and the arts. J.B. Priestley exmaines the personality of the monarch after which the Edwardian era is named, analyzes the legacy of the Victorian age, and discusses the contrast beyween High Society and what were called the Lower Orders.

5.0 out of 5 stars History without tears, 29 Oct 2001
By A Customer
How refreshing it is to read the history of a distant era written by an eye-witness. Written moreover in J.B. Priestley's inimitable down-to-earth Yorkshire style. This is not a historical treatise for academics and there are - thankfully - no footnotes. There are plenty of pictures though interspersing this chatty and often humourous account of life under Edward VII.
Beginning exactly 100 years ago with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, Edward's reign lasted only nine years, but Priestley rightly considers the influence of the Edwardian era to extend right up to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. And what an era it was! After Victoria's interminable mourning for her beloved Prince Albert, which Priestley calls 'bad for trade', here was Edward who actually enjoyed being King. It seems that the majority of his subjects fully intended to enjoy it with him. Edward inherited the British Empire at the height of its power, although there was still the business of the Boer War to bring to an end. Priestley vividly describes the smart society's Golden Age with its glittering West End parties, shooting at Sandringham, and weekend high jinks in country houses, although - being a 'north country radical of lower middle class origin'- he had no opportunity to take part himself . On a more serious note, Priestley goes on to discuss some of the class tensions of the time, the beginnings of the Labour movement, the first old age pensions, the suffragettes, and the troubles in Ireland. Many other events are crammed into this relatively short era: the birth of the music-hall, the Dr. Crippen murder hunt, the sinking of the "Titanic", Scott's tragic Antarctic Expedition, the first attempts to beat censorship in the arts.
An extremely readable and entertaining book. History without tears.
