Product Description

Review
"Hilarious social commentary...If all biographies were like Strachey's, they would probably kill off the novel altogether."

Product Description
Lytton Strachey's "Queen Victoria" revolutionised the art of biography by using elements of romantic fiction and melodrama to create a warm, humorous and very human portrait of an iconic figure. We see Victoria as a strong-willed child with a famous temper, as the 18-year-old girl queen, as a monarch, wife, mother and widow. Equally fascinating are the depictions of her relationships: with her governess "precious Lehzen", with Peel, Gladstone and Disraeli, with her beloved Albert and, in later life, her legendary devotion to her Highland servant John Brown, all of which show a different side of her staid, pious image.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Biography on Queen Victoria, 26 Jan 2004

Do you want to understand Queen Victoria?
Do you want to understand how she become the ultimate monarch?
Do you want to understand what the love and marriage to Prince Albert meant to her?
Do you want to understand how she manage to put nearly everybody in awe of her?
Do you want to understand what John Brown meant to her?

Lytton Strachey' s "Queen Victoria" is the classical biography on Britain' s longest reigning monarch. You have to start here. The book is superbly written, informative, with passion and inside and understanding. You will find a great personality, a real character, often not as nice as you "remember her to be", a woman of strong will, a young and lively young woman, a not too attached mother, a devoted and loving wife, a woman with a lots of doubts about her abilities and character but a fighter and a proud one, a grieving widow and shrewd and able politician. Queen Victoria was so much more than people believe her to be. After having read this book you understand why a whole period was named after her.

An absolutely stunning book!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, 6 Oct 2000
By A Customer
I have always been kind of scared of biogaphies. I feared they were boring and stuffed with chronological annotations. With this book I have discovered they can be really enjoyable and fun. The author not only gives a full account of queen Victoria's life, but he also writes about her feelings in quite a remarkable way. He's always accurate, and he always stops analysing her emotional reactions, her sometimes childish behaviour, without ever patronising and always showing the human side of what has with time become a legendary queen. You can read between the lines he's fond of the woman he's writing about, and as you go on reading his feelings become your own. At the end of the book you cannot but feel sympathy for queen Victoria and you wish you could turn back time and share some of the most glorious moments of the long reign.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vicky Patch, 24 Feb 2004

This review is from: Queen Victoria (Hardcover)
QUEEN VICTORIA may be disappointing for anyone dazzled by EMINENT VICTORIANS: it's not as funny as EV and nowhere near as well-written, with lots of odd grammatical mistakes and undigested research. An ordinary writer would have been satisfied with it, but Strachey wasn't an ordinary writer and he could have done so much better.
