Product Description

The wings slowly tilted, and as Commander Pott, at last realizing what CHITTY-CHITTY-BANG-BANG was up to, pressed down the accelerator pedal, the big green car tilted up her shining green and silver nose and took off! Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, invented Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang for his young son Caspar, and it went on to become the most famous and best-loved car in fiction. This treasured story inspired a film and a musical and is celebrated in this lavish, highly collectible new edition, complete with its original timeless artwork by John Burningham, one of Britain’s most popular author/illustrators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and delightful, 10 Feb 2004
By Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, IL USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
This is the story of Commander Caractacus Pott, a highly eccentric inventor, and his family. When they acquire a broken-down old automobile, Commander Pott goes to work on it, and seemingly with the help of the automobile itself, he rebuilds it into a car that is more than a little bit magic. Due to the sound it makes when it starts up, the Pott children name the car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! However, a trip in this car is like nothing you can imagine, anything can happen, and something fantastic invariably will! And so it's off to adventure and danger!

This is a charming and delightful children's story, one that you could hardly imagine was written by Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books! My kids love this whimsical story and yours will too. My family highly recommends this book to yours. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and the best Chitty, 22 Nov 2006
By Cangarwbach (Shrewsbury, UK) - See all my reviews
I have been compelled to write a review to counter the absurd remarks made by other reviewers. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL STORY!!!! Ian Fleming wrote this book as a simple story of a magical car, thieves, channel-crossing and kids. None of this Hollywood soppy mush with Childcatchers and awfully titled Truly Scrumptious, the film and subsequent productions are completely Vulgarian. So clear your head of all that popularist nonsense and enjoy a much more enjoyable (and possible slightly more plausible?) version of a classic tale from a classic author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 3 Jun 2007
By J. Heath "book worm" (UK) - See all my reviews

My five yr old son can't stand the sugary sweet film. HE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THE BOOK ! Which is the way it should be. If you have a child that likes gadgets & adventure then this is perfect. There's a lot of detail about how the car works, which doesn't keep my daughter's attention, but my son will listen to it over agin asking for more & more chapters. The characters are skimmed over & the emphasis is on action. We had to start again as soon as we'd finished. Oh & yes, there's very little resemblance to the film except that the title is the same. I suspect that we'll be onto the James Bond novels as soon as he's in his teens. Can't wait.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book destroys the magical image of the original story.
I firmly believe this book is not suitable for beginner readers. It bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original film apart from the name of the car. Read more
