Product Description

Review
In an immediate attention-grabber, Minerva and Max McFearless's dangerous adventure begins in medias res, with the pair of young monster hunters hanging in a cage over a pit of fiery molten lava. Eleven-year-old Minerva explains how they got into the perilous situation: The children have come to rescue their monster-hunting father from the vicious monster king, the Zarmaglorg. Along the way, they defeat the Greblor, the Howleewoof and other monstrous enemies, while assisted by a talking one-eyed coyote and Ms. Monstranomicon, a living encyclopedia with a poisonous bite. Their story is illustrated with ghoulishly fun pages from Ms. Monstranomicon, describing monsters and the recipes required to defeat them (rather disgusting recipes that can be assembled in even non-monster-fighting kitchens by a dedicated reader). Though Max and Minerva's quest to save their father runs through pedestrian prose and some overly cheap jokes (such as Castle Doominstinkinfart), the lighthearted gross-out humor, lavishly illustrated with photographs and childlike drawings, will provide plenty of silly entertainment. (Fantasy. 8-10) (Kirkus Reviews)

This is a fantastic flashback story about a brave family's journey to stop all monsters invading the world. A terrific story and truly amazing illustrations. An excellent fast moving book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A rollicking good yarn with plenty of easter eggs if the parents happen to be Zappa fans..., 19 Dec 2007

Alright, so he's the younger son of Frank Zappa - does that mean that as the son of a famous person, he can't write?

No, not necessarily. Just as elder brother Dweezil is a fine guitar player, and younger sister Diva wields a mean pair of knitting needles, and elder sister Moon Unit wrote the most casually savage chicklit novel of all time ('America the Beautiful', in case you were wondering), so Ahmet turns out to have a nice line in pre-teen yarn-spinning. It's a rollicking tale of a family devoted to hunting down evil monsters, and as soon as my daughter is old enough to understand actual speech I intend to try it out on her. In the meantime, I enjoyed it. And I have high standards.

The Zappa kids have all done rather well, in my opinion; none of them have even tried to contend with the monstrous legacy of their father, but have gone their own way instead. I suppose the kids of famous 60s rock stars all have the terrible lesson of Julian Lennon dangling in front of them, but even so, this particular family has maintained a streak of bracing anarchy and peppery independence, without devoting themselves (in the manner of some families of famous people) to shoring up the legend of the patriarch. Good on them.

Is this a good book to read to your kid/s? Yes, especially if one of them is a tomboyish and intellectually curious girl.

Two thumbs up.
