The Guardians look after time for all people. Humans always rush around claiming that they do not have enough time, but no one thinks of guarding it. The Guardians do this and in every region of the world there is one who protects time for us all. In Greenwich, it is Old Father Tim. When the Wreccas, who populate the Underneath (below ground), send Snot to steal the Tick, their only intention is to wreak havoc on the Guardians who live Topside (above ground). They don't expect Snot to find out that she feels more at home Topside and that she really rather likes Tid (Old Father Tim's grandson) who she has to trick. And little do they know that without the Tick, time will stop forever...

About the Author
Val Tyler was a primary school teacher for many years but is now writing full time. She lives near Greenwich park with her husband and large clan of children.

I bought the Time Wreccas by Val Tyler to read to my primary school class. I have not known a book to so take their imagination since I read a previous class The Philosopher's Stone.

The children love the characters especially Tid and Sophie, and they have a very soft spot for the Bushytails. There is always a sigh of regret when I have to stop reading to them. Quite a few of the children have now bought their own copies as I am obviously not reading fast enough.

I think that the book is wonderful, I confess that I have had to finish it in my own time, the characters are well rounded and believable, the world that Val Tyler has created shows flair and imagination.

Above all I love the idea that Sophie inspite of making a most dreadful mistake at the beginning of the book is forgiven first and then able to put things right. This is a vital lesson for children to learn, and engendered a lot of discussions with my class on these important issues.

Primary teachers out there, get hold of a copy of this book and you will find it a useful tool for PSHE as well as a wonderful read. I know that this is Val Tyler's first book and do hope that it is not the last.

How dare another reviewer make the assumption that my previous review was only positive (and indeed possible) if I were somehow related to the author? How ignorant to think that it is hard to obtain pre-publication drafts of books. This was available on e-bay several weeks before publication and the information that the sequel was to come out in January 2006 was published on the web even longer beforehand. I wonder whether 'a reader from the UK' is the one with a hidden agenda.
I care not whether 'a reader from the UK' likes The Time Wreccas or not. It is a matter of personal taste. My opinion stands. It's a very good read and my children absolutely loved it. Apparently Ottakars bookshop agreed with them, because they put it in the nominations for their children's book prize and my daughter informs me that Waterstones were featuring it for World Book Day.

A beautiful example of literature. Val Tyler embraces the innocence of childhood (in the manner of William Blake or C.S.Lewis) in her style of writing, choice of character and general plot. It is stylishly written with a sort of 1950s flavour to sweeten it.

But having said that, it is not all as naive as one may think. Tyler has thrown in action and excitement to keep in with contemporary demands, whilst subtly hinting at something far darker and more sinister.

The sweet innocence of Tid contrasts greatly with the bitterness of Sheldon and the hate of the Wreccas. But beneath this coating you see the works of a stable, loving family, contrasting with that of a dysfunctional, insecure family. And on top of that, an entire community of Wreccas who have a pathetic replica of social structure.

This is a novel with layers for those who love the innocence of a fifties children's book, those who love the action of contemporary literature, and for those who relish in the deeper hints towards real life issues, for the individual and for society. I know of children, teenagers and adults, all of whom have said one thing in common...

..."At first it was really good, then I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!"

I say, it is a beautiful example of how literature ought to be.
