Product Description

It's the first day at school for Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs and they're excited to be going - all except Stegosaurus who's very nervous. Then when they get to school Harry and his Bucket get separated and Harry's not so sure he's going to like school after all. Harry soon sees another boy who's very unhappy and decides to try and cheer him up - with the help of hs dinosaurs, of course, and before long everyone is enjoying their first day as well as making brand new friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to help your little one prepare for school , 31 Oct 2007
By Dr. H. Payne - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Ian Whybrow's Harry and the dinosaurs/robots series is hugely successful. Here he takes the well-loved character from small anxiety (caused as always by his big sister) about starting school, through the first day there. Harry likes his teacher, finds his peg to hang his coat on, helps a little boy who is more scared than he is and makes a new friend in so doing. A simple, positive story about a real and important experience in most children's lives.

As adults we often want to tell children that "everything will be alright, don't worry". If they have genuine worries this approach dismisses their fears rather than helping them feel understood and supporting them to find solutions. In reading this book with my little boy it gave us chance to talk about what he was looking forward to in starting school and what he might be a little bit scared about. Hearing about how Harry ultimately enjoyed himself was very encouraging.

We read the book repeatedly in the run-up to starting school. By the time he got to the gates he'd forgotten all about his previously expressed anxieties and ran off into the mêlée. After a few days of being there we re-read the story (and still do from time to time) and my son spoke quite authoritatively that there is nothing to worry about in school. That in itself was quite an interesting learning experience about the nature of fear compared to real experience ...!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor copy-writing..., 18 Sep 2008
By Nathan Pitman - See all my reviews

There's some really strange language on a couple of pages in this book, to quote the book:

Sam said, "You can't take dinosaurs to school, stupid!" That's why her toast fell on the floor.

So her toast fell on the floor becuase she made a simple statement? It makes no sense to me as an adult. In the picture Harry appears to be pushing the plate out of her hands? Another quote:

"Jump out, Stegosaurus," called Harry. "Don't be shy!" But Stegosaurus wanted a whisper.

Surely that should be "Jump out Stegosaurus," without the comma after out? And does the next sentence make any sense? "...wanted a whisper." - wanted 'to' whisper perhaps?

Poor copy-writing lets this book down.
