Product Description

Product Description

Nim lives on an island in the middle of the wide blue sea with her father, Jack, an iguana called Fred, a sea lion called Selkie, a turtle called Chica and a satellite dish for her email. She wouldn't swap places with anyone. But when Jack gets stranded in his sailing boat and disaster threatens her home, Nim must be braver than she's ever been before. And she needs help from her friends...This work is a fresh, delicious adventure-fantasy for readers aged 8 and above.

From the Author

Nim's Island is about to become a Hollywood feature film, starring Jodie Foster as Alex, and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) as Nim. It's being produced by Walden Media (the producers of Narnia) and distributed by Fox-Walden; filming is due to start in July 2007, and release will be in 2008.

As an author, this has been an incredibly exciting journey, starting with the first email from the freelance producer Paula Mazur, who simply picked the book up in her local library for her son to read. She painted me a warm picture of starting him off by reading the first page aloud - and then of reading the whole book to the whole family. By the time she'd finished the story, she'd decided - with her children's avid encouragement - that she wanted to make a film.

It's been an humbling experience to have my story treated with such love, respect, and depth of understanding. Working as a consultant on the script has taught me a lot about this story, and even more about narrative in general.

In the years since Nim's Island was first published, I've received many requests (and suggestions!) from young readers hoping for a sequel. I'm pleased to say I've recently finished the final edits for Nim at Sea, which will be released in Australia on June 1, 2007. It was very interesting living with these characters again, and finding out what happened after the end of the first book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'right on-line' island adventure for young readers, 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Nim's Island (Paperback)
My daughter (7) and I were gripped by Nim's adventures this really is a great book. Although it deals with some important contemporary issues, like the environment, Nim's attempts to save her island from the Troppo Tourists had us thoroughly entertained. It's good to see a book that addresses some very 'thorny' problems particularly for young children. Nim has lost her mother in a diving accident and her father is set adrift at sea - she is alone on the island with only a seal, iguana, a sea turtle, oh and her hero Alex Rover (thousands of miles away) for company but this doesn't stop our brave little hero. Nim really is an inspiration and has little ones begging for 'just one more chapter, PLEEEEEEASE' every night.

4.0 out of 5 stars entrancing and exciting, 6 Jun 2008
This book is amazing. Nim shares her island with her Dad and her unusual pets - like an iguana, a sea lion and a turtle. It might all seem perfect, but her Mum has disappeared when tourists purposely bumped their ship into the whale she was studying.

Nim's Dad has now sailed off to study plankton but she decides to stay on the island. She gets in touch with a writer who wants to publish a book that her Dad has written. But when a storm hits the island, the writer comes to save Nim - but will she get there in time? And also, the tourists who made Nim's Mum disappear come to the island - will Nim and her animals stop them from turning her island into a holiday beach?

I am an 8-year old girl, and I think this is the right age to get the most out of Nim's island. I probably think that it is more for girls than boys - because the heroine is a girl, and there are no battles with swords or guns. I started to read it when I was camping, and was entranced by it right from the first page. Wendy Orr, the author, can easily make you imagine actually being on the island, and when I think about it at night-time, it makes me dream about sandy beaches.

I would definitely recommend this - and I'm waiting to see how different it'll be to the film. But I bet the book is better - as you get more detail and picture it for yourself. I've given it four stars rather than five because I would have liked a slightly more dramatic adventure to happen - but it didn't spoil my liking for the book.

I bought this for my 7 yr old niece and she loved it. She's not overly girly and likes to read on her own. Good for girls with a little tom boy in them.
