Product Description
Nim lives on an island in the middle of the wide blue sea with her father, Jack, an iguana called Fred, a sea lion called Selkie, a turtle called Chica and a satellite dish for her email. She wouldn't swap places with anyone. But when Jack gets stranded in his sailing boat and disaster threatens her home, Nim must be braver than she's ever been before. And she needs help from her friends...This work is a fresh, delicious adventure-fantasy for readers aged 8 and above.
From the Author
Nim's Island is about to become a Hollywood feature film, starring Jodie Foster as Alex, and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) as Nim. It's being produced by Walden Media (the producers of Narnia) and distributed by Fox-Walden; filming is due to start in July 2007, and release will be in 2008.
As an author, this has been an incredibly exciting journey, starting with the first email from the freelance producer Paula Mazur, who simply picked the book up in her local library for her son to read. She painted me a warm picture of starting him off by reading the first page aloud - and then of reading the whole book to the whole family. By the time she'd finished the story, she'd decided - with her children's avid encouragement - that she wanted to make a film.
It's been an humbling experience to have my story treated with such love, respect, and depth of understanding. Working as a consultant on the script has taught me a lot about this story, and even more about narrative in general.
In the years since Nim's Island was first published, I've received many requests (and suggestions!) from young readers hoping for a sequel. I'm pleased to say I've recently finished the final edits for Nim at Sea, which will be released in Australia on June 1, 2007. It was very interesting living with these characters again, and finding out what happened after the end of the first book.
