Product Description

Product Description
Teenage Charlie has always hero-worshipped his grandfather, who was one of the Battle of Britain pilots. But when he starts tracking down his grandfather's old wartime chums, he discovers that his hero belonged to the fascist Blackshirts before the war - and there are photos to prove it. His grandfather at first denies it, but Charlie is determined to get him to face the truth, though it nearly breaks their relationship. And Charlie has to come to terms with the fact that even heroes can make mistakes. He learns this again when a friend of his becomes pregnant, together with the fact that however much you want to be a hero, sometimes there's nothing you can do to help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, 10 Jul 2007

(REAL NAME)
I read this book in about an hour and a half. I should have been working, but the story and characters gripped me from the first page to the last. Far from being an 'all action' adventure the book keeps you involved by the gradual realisation that Charlie's 'Hero' Grandad is hiding a dark secret. Just as you are ready to condemn him for this, the book sweeps the rug from beneath you and asks you to examine your own ideas. The issues (being deliberately vague here!) are raised and tackled with a clear point of view, but the book seeks to examine how people can be led onto different paths in life rather than simply condemning. To feel sympathy for the 'villain' was as surprising to me as it was to Charlie. Great stuff.
