Product Description

Product Description
Gryllus the talking pig is back. Well, strictly speaking, he's a human in a pig's body...it's a long story. After saving the Cosmos once before, Gryllus is a bit tired of being a hero. He wants to return to human form and live a quiet life, preferably working as Chief Pie Taster to the Gods. The only person who can change him back is the demi-goddess Circe - but Circe, along with all the other Olympians, is nowhere to be found. It looks like the Cosmos is in grave danger once again, and a mysterious prophecy seems to suggest that Gryllus might be the pig to sort things out. So, along with Sibyl the ex-priestess, the singing head of Orpheus, and an immortal grasshopper, Gryllus travels to the Underworld and back, and is surprised to discover just who is trying to destroy the Cosmos.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest book, 23 Aug 2006
This book and the one before it -- THE PIG SCROLLS -- are simply hilarious. Narrated by a talking pig -- one Gryllus, whose main concerns seem to be getting enough to eat and keeping himself safe at all costs -- they are a whirlwind (and very silly) tour through Greek mythology. I can't understand why these aren't a huge hit -- they deserve to be! For kids 10 and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, 26 Oct 2006
I read this book when I was supposed to be reading something much more self-important for my book club, and I discovered it to be the perfect antidote to po-faced contemporary literature. On one level this is an entertaining children's book, with the added benefit of some classical references, but on another level this is book for all ages containing some gleeful humour probably off the radar of your average child reader - after all, it has a whole chapter based on punning "The Life Of Pi" (except it's a pie...). Wean your kids off Harry Potter and onto this, then read it yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 7 Mar 2007

I read this book to my 10 year old son, and at one point I was laughing so much that I couldn't carry on. I enjoyed the fact that it's accessible on different levels: I liked the Classical references, my son enjoyed the fact that all Gryllus thinks about is food and saving himself. I'm sure there are other references which I missed, and I think it's a book that would bear, or even benefit from, re-readings.
