3.0 out of 5 stars warning - expurgated edition, 11 Jun 2004

This is a wonderful book - but the Puffin version is a 'young readers' edition', meaning it has been cut considerably. I had not realized this when ordering it from Amazon - it does not tell you in the Amazon info. So in order that others will not be disappointed - get the complete version! This is a book you want to read as much as possible of, believe me. The full edition is a true 5-star one!

5.0 out of 5 stars the power of one, 8 Nov 2002
By Miss R E Bryan (Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
this book is a fantastic, emotional journey through a young boys life who is no stanger to the injustice of racial hatred. The language which is used is almost poetical and Courtenay describes things in such detail that you feel like you are there, in the story with Peekay. it is a tale of hope, ambition, sadness and dreams, and the desire that if you want something bad enough you just might get it. this book made me cry on several occasions and laugh out loud on many others. It is just packed with raw emotion about Africa in the 1940s.
the characters are genuine and you really fall in love with ones like Doc and Geel Piet. by the end of the book you are captured by the magic of The Power of One. Tandia, the second book picks up where The Power of One finishes and proves to be just as fantastic as the first book. I would recomend this book to any one and everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS BRILLIANT !, 10 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Bryce Courtenay is an exceptional storyteller and I have read this book so many times and still love it ! The only disappointment was that they made a film out of it, which was average. The story is about Peekay and his early life growing up in South Africa, as he strives to become the boxing champion of the world. Bryce describes the characters, places and events in such an awe inspiring way that you'll not fail to become attached to them all. You really can picture the hardship in the country and spiritual awareness of the people. This always has me laughing and crying at times no matter where I am..and it will you.
