Product Description
Synopsis
Just as the Iron Curtain fell on Eastern Europe, Steinbeck and Capa began a remarkable journey through the Soviet Union. Their travels took them to Moscow and Stalingrad. What they saw and recorded was what Steinbeck called the "great other side", the ordinary lives of Russian men and women. Combining Steinbeck's compassion, humour and eye for detail with Capa's photographic studies, this text is a unique potrait of Russia and its people as they emerged from the ravages of war. Here too is an intimate glimpse of two great artists at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny, honest, unforgettable account of a trip to Russia, 27 Mar 2002
By ric_lampreia@oninet.pt (Lisboa, Portugal) - See all my reviews
As the Cold War was begginning, John Steinbeck and Robert Capa had the idea to go to Russia and see what it was really like. This book is the account of their travel. But it has so much in it - fun, beauty, tragedy, hope, and the sense of bureaucracy - that you'll not only remember it: you'll want to pack your suitcase and go there immediatelly to find out if it still is like that!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a must., 24 Jul 2001

If you really want to have an idea of what life was like in the USSR after the war (and later)and you like Steinbeck's style and Capa's photographs, you must read this humorous and honest reportage.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm..., 3 Jan 2008
I'm a big fan of John Steinbeck but the man really went down in my estimation after reading this. It reads like the diary of a Neo-con, flag waving, commie-hating hick at times as he stumbles around the USSR criticising and making jokes. (This review isn't about USA vs USSR either, let face it between the 2 political systems millions died and we were all nearly blown up). I just expected a hell of a lot more insight and intellectualism from him. It certainly didn't feel like I was reading the writings of a great humanist, a man of the people, and author of The Grapes of Wrath.
