Product Description

Product Description

It is September 1938 and during a heatwave Europe tensely awaits the outcome of the Munich conference, where they will learn if there is to be a war. In Paris people are waiting too, among them Mathieu, Jacques and Philippe, each wrestling with their own love affairs, doubts and angsts – and none of them ready to fight. The second volume in Sartre’s wartime Roads to Freedom trilogy, The Reprieve cuts between locations and characters to build an impressionistic collage of the hopes, fears and self-deception of an entire continent as it blinkers itself against the imminent threat of war.

About the Author

Philosopher, novelist, playwright and polemicist, Jean-Paul Sartre is thought to have been the central figure in post-war European culture and political thinking. His most well-known works, all of which are published by Penguin, include THE AGE OF REASON, NAUSEA and IRON IN THE SOUL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sartre's best, 21 April 2003
By George Owers - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Reprieve is a stunning, dazzling novel; Sartre's most powerful, yet subtle and complex. In a few hundred pages, many stories are told in such depth and with such tender feeling as to distinguish the novel alone, but at the same time the narrative offers so much more, both philosophically and literarily.
It is written in fluctuating, unique prose, different scenes cobbled artistically and aptly into single sentences, the prose vacillating between many diverse scenarios, settings and characters, providing a quite awe-inspiring juxtaposition of ideas and concepts. Each facet, melded by Sartre's unceasing genius, works in union whilst simultaneously amazing one on its own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth a read, 21 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This book traces the lives and emotions of several characters during the invasion of the Sudentenland building up to the second world war. The constant switching between the lives of different characters throughout the book manages to create an overall impression of unity of loneliness as each character deals with the imminent threat of war in his own way. From heros to cowards, Sartre provides an interesting pyschological insight into the individual and how he adapts to the events taking place around him and shaping his life although which are entirely beyond his control. This is by far my favourite book in the "Roads to Freedom" trilogy.
